Problems and Solutions

1. One Monitor - - Multiple Computers

Leyon Sakey writes:

I went shopping for a 3rd monitor to hook into my trading computer. I lost my objectivity when I saw the HP 600-1050 wireless all-in-one. In the back of my head I had a suspicion that it wasn't configured to add monitors. After lengthy consultation with my main man in Calcutta I am reluctantly accepting the bad news. However, I had a fall back position of keeping my existing wired computer, but using a single keyboard and mouse for both the wired and the wireless computers. Gunga Din shot that idea down as well.

I'm hoping that there exists a peripheral device that will bridge the two computers. Is anyone here as computer smart as their 10 year old grandchild.

Thank you for thinking about the question.

Gary Thompson replies:

If you want to connect two computers to the same monitor, mouse and keyboard what you need is called a KVM switch (Keyboard, Video, Mouse).

There are many available and come in in 2, 3, 4, etc computer connects. Search Google for "KVM switch". This search will provide information overload.

Most all come with appropriate cables - usually a combo cable (3 cables in each bundle), so hooking up is no problem. There is normally a button on the switch to switch back and forth. The button is usually also complemented with a configurable keyboard shortcut (hotkey) to switch also - e.g. Ctrl/Shift/1 - go to computer one. This means that you can only use one computer at a time, but switching is fast (less than a second). I have a 4 computer switch setup and have used KVM switches for many years.

Since you need a 2 computer KVM switch here is a recommended link .... Simple KVM switch from a reliable mfg. --

If you also want to switch your computer speakers and/or USB portals and/or HDMI ports then you will need a more complex model. Give me a call at 858 531-5760 and we can discuss.

2. Renaming Photos

Bill Peerenboom writes:

What we need to be able to do is figure out how to "Rename" pictures before sending them in emails.

Gary Thompson Replies:

From the Picasa Help section ....

To rename your photos, follow these steps:

1. Select the photos you'd like to rename.
2. Click the File menu, then choose Rename. You can also use keyboard
shortcut F2.
3. Enter a new name for these files. You have the option to include
the date or image resolution in the filename.
4. Click Rename.

IN MY OWN WORDS ....

In practice, just select a photo by clicking on it. an icon of the photo
will appear in the selected photos box (lower left). Then just press the
F2 key (or go to the File Menu and select Rename). A box will appear and
you can rename the photo. Click the Rename button. You can now send by
email by using the CTRL-E keys or select email from the File Menu.
